Faculty Spotlight - Jo Ann Martin

Every student and faculty member in the Tuxedo Union Free School District knows Jo Ann Martin. Some call her “the bus lady” or “the lunch lady;” others call her “Mrs. Martin.” Jo Ann proudly owns each of these monikers and the fact that she plays multiple roles in the students’ lives. “It is a pleasure when I am helping them on the bus or feeding them,” said Jo Ann.

Jo Ann still holds the official title of Transportation Director that she was given 32 years ago, a position that comes with many responsibilities. She not only oversees the transportation of all Tuxedo students, but also those who attend private schools, Orange-Ulster BOCES and other outside programs. Managing it all requires Jo Ann to be alert and on call from 6:00 am until 6:45 pm. “It is a long day,” she said.

In the middle of that long day, around 11:00 am, Jo Ann takes off her transportation hat and puts on a chef’s one. “During Covid, I got involved with making and delivering hot meals to families because there was limited staff available,” she said. She has continued to stay on and help in the kitchen. “Help” is the common denominator for everything Jo Ann does. Soon, she will start her holiday outreach by delivering turkeys and toys to District families in need. “If I can help one student or one family, I am happy,” she said.

Jo Ann’s devotion to our learners and community is in her DNA. “Jo Ann has been a dedicated member of the Tuxedo family for over 30 years,” said Superintendent Jeff White. “She demonstrates a remarkable work ethic, positive attitude and a deep commitment to our students. We are very lucky to have her.”

When asked what motivates her, Jo Ann’s eyes brightened. “I love it here and I love these kids,” she said  “I have known each of them since kindergarten, when I did their bus orientation and safety drills.” She prides herself on knowing the name of every student, some of whose parents also went through Tuxedo schools. It is like repeating history,” she said. The feeling is mutual, as senior Charlie Nemce attested. “Whenever I am on the lunch line, she talks to me and asks me for hair advice,” Charlie said. “She talks to all of the kids. She is great!”

Jo Ann’s service and commitment have not gone unrecognized. In November of 2022, she received the Mid-Hudson School Study Council’s (MHSSC) Award for Excellence for demonstrating superior educational leadership and accomplishments in an educational environment. Winners were nominated by school districts and BOCES and, from there, selected by MHSSC. “It was really an honor,” she said.” “It makes you feel that what you do is really important.”

There are not many things that are of greater importance than keeping students safe. The Tuxedo community is lucky to have Jo Ann at the helm, making sure all goes smoothly each and every day. Thank you!
