If you're on the hunt for a new book, consider a visit to the recently unveiled “Little Free Library” at the Rogers and Cabrini Lodge, Sons of Italy, in Tuxedo’s East Village. The space, complete with a walkway, raised planters and seating area, was thoughtfully designed and built by George F. Baker junior, Jack Reilly, as part of his journey toward becoming an Eagle Scout.
Inspired by a similar project he worked on with the Ramapo Valley Rotary for a “Little Free Library” at George Grant Mason Elementary School in 2023, Jack aimed to create a welcoming spot where people could relax, enjoy the outdoors and find a good read. The chosen location also pays homage to his Italian-American heritage.
With guidance from his Boy Scout Troop leaders, Brian Colton, Euric Guerrero and Sean McCarter, Jack led the project’s fundraising, planning and execution over the course of six months.
Jack’s art teacher, Mark Stankewicz, offered creative direction. “It was a pleasure to support Jack in his Eagle Project,” Stankewicz said. “Watching him take initiative and dedicate himself to creating something meaningful for the community was inspiring.” Secondary teachers Jennifer Jones and Diane Winne also provided valuable guidance over the last six months, and Billco Landscape Contractors, LLC of Tuxedo played a pivotal role as the technical advisor to the library.
Jack is not a Tuxedo resident, but has attended the Tuxedo Union Free School District since first grade, and feels a deep connection to the community. “In many ways, I feel more at home here than where I live,” he says, adding that he is grateful to local businesses, groups, and community members who supported him. Reflecting on the project, he admitted he was nervous initially, especially when asking for donations, but his confidence grew with each step. “I always had the goal of earning Eagle in the back of my mind, but I never thought it would actually happen,” he said. Now, he’s thrilled with the result and proud to give back to a community that has welcomed him warmly.
